Dr Kalpit Patel (MS Ortho, FRCS)

(Specialist Joint Replacement Surgeon)

Biologic solution to knee joint problems

Knee osteoarthritis is associated with constant knee joint pain, stiffness and leg deformity with muscle weakness. Painkillers do not halt the disease progression and they are harmful as well. Before going for the last option of Knee replacement surgery there is a new science of knee joint preservation with biologic cell therapy to regrow new tissue cartilage ( shock absorbers of knee ). This is fantastic news!!

Orthopaedic cell therapy (OCT)

Dr Kalpit Patel has studied all orthopedic-stem-cell research worldwide and knows various Interventional-Orthopedic technologies and protocols. So our patients receive the full benefit of our unique understanding of regenerative treatments for orthopedic problems like painful Knee joint Arthritis. Orthopaedic cell therapy (OCT) is a non-surgical procedure that utilizes targeted injections of your body's own healing agents to help reduce knee pain and improve function.

What is the Injection made of?

Stem cells are essentially foundation cells for every organ and tissue in human body. All of us have originated from stem cells from our parents. As these multiply and grow, the entire human body is formed in nine months. Throughout our lives, stem cells work as your body's primary means of repairing damage. There are different types of stem cells, but for treating orthopedic injuries, the only one with demonstrated efficacy is mesenchymal stem cells (MSC).

Based on our extensive experience, the most effective MSCs are derived from blood and bone marrow. These cells can turn into bone, cartilage, muscle, tendons, or ligaments.

Advantages of Therapy

  • Pain reduction and improved knee function
  • Minimal time off of work
  • Minimal disruption of regular routine

No surgery

  • Minimal use of mobility tools (crutches, etc.)
  • Minimal disruption of regular routine

Procedure

You will most likely have an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan, which clearly will show the problem affecting your knee.

Bone Marrrow Cell therapy

Our specialist Orthopaedic team draws bone marrow from pelvic bones, processes it in a certified lab to derive 5-20 times more cells per unit volume injected than can be achieved by a centrifuge machine . This cell suspension is then injected using precise image guidance into the precise area of your body part to rebuild, and repair tissues of KNEE joint damaged due to Arthritis. Research and experience has shown excellent outcomes in treating all but the most stage of ARTHRITIS.

Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is created by concentrating the platelet cells in your blood to enhance healing. These platelets have growth factors that can kick-start your normal healing process to encourage your body to heal itself.

Precision

The precise placement of orthobiologics like stem cells and platelet products using advanced imaging guidance is a new medical specialty called Interventional Orthopedics.

Post-Procedure

For the first day you should limit activity on the joint and wear a knee brace. Rarely we use painkillers.

Which Orthopaedic conditions can be treated?

  • Early stages of KNEE ARTHRITIS
  • Heel plantar Fasciitis, Tennis elbow, Frozen shoulder, Trigger Finger

FAQ

Is the Oct procedure painful?

The OCT therapy is done under local anesthesia and mild sedation. There is no significant pain or discomfort during or after procedure.

When do we start getting benefit?

Most patients report an improvement immediately. However the benefit continues to build up for months and years after therapy. Most of our very active patients are able to return to their regular routine in 6 weeks and push their performance to higher levels in 8 to 12 weeks..

How does OCT work in damaged knee joint?

The injected cells will result in biological repair of damaged cartilage tissue of knee. They reduce pain, swelling and inflammation in the knee joint.

What is the guarantee of cure after Oct in knee joint arthritis ?

It depends on multiple factors like the technical expertise of the doctor, age of the patient, bone quality of knee, and muscle exercise efforts by the patient.8 out of 10 patients are happy after OCT but as it is a research method no center in the world has reported 100% cure by cartilage regeneration.

Does this treatment have any side-effects?

Very rarely the patient might get headache, vomitting or slight fever which can be controlled with medication.
